Conrad New York
New York, NYThe Conrad New York Hotel uses art as its focus and inspiration for the complete redesign of a 1980’s 15-story building, and constructing a public art corridor through the design. Acting as a node in the continuous procession from the street, the hotel is able to transform into an internal public plaza.
The design plays with the idea of openness through studied materiality. In the hotel’s atrium, the existing monumental 13-story LeWitt wall drawing was utilized as a point of departure. Located centrally, a series of “veils” enhance the drawing’s reading: controlling views towards the wall while never obscuring it.
The balconies framing the atrium are sculpted and shaped with Corian in varying angles, becoming less severe with higher floors, containing the space while controlling the acoustics.
